With all of the controversy around Common Core and teacher effectiveness, I listened with interest to Elizabeth Green’s interview on PBS Newshour on 9/16/14. She is the author of “Building a Better Teacher: How Teaching Works (and How to Teach It to Everyone)” and the cofounder and CEO of Chalkbeat, a non-profit news organization covering educational change. An excerpt from her book, written for The New York Times Magazine, was entitled “WHY DO AMERICANS STINK AT MATH”. I thought her comments were very insightful and hit the nail on the head with her assessment and understanding of how teachers teach, and what works, and why.
As a former Math teacher, I had come to the conclusion that understanding how a student reaches a wrong answer is key to helping a student reach the right answer. Putting Elizabeth Green’s ideas into practice would serve us well.
