My 86 year old mother was having an issue printing a PDF, which she said was blurry. So we scheduled a call. The first half hour of which was guiding her through the pretty simple steps of allowing me to view her screen and operate her mouse.

She was having trouble with the application (I could no longer see her screen), so I asked her to Quit the application. Something most of us can do in our sleep. I guided her up to the name of the application and asked her to click it and on the dropdown click Quit. Wasn’t happening.

So I confirmed the application was open. “Look to the right of the Apple logo, what does it say?”. She replied, “TeamViewer”. Good, she is in the app we want to quit. I said, “Look at your keyboard. What key is to the left of the space bar.” She said, “Command”. Good. Now I want you to click Command and Q. Her response, “What’s Q?”. I said, “The letter”. She said, “What letter?”. I think she thought a letter in the mail. I just started laughing, “Mom the LETTER Q on your keyboard”. She laughed too.

She was unable to quit the app so I had her restart the computer. We got TeamViewer working and I was able to see her screen. We found the PDF and clicked print. The window came up where you see your print options and a little thumbnail representation of the document you are printing.

Which … was … blurry.

I explained that it was just a representation of the document being printed. I changed the view to landscape and it printed successfully. I told her to ignore this next time, which she will undoubtedly forget and we will be on another thoroughly maddening call.
