What it means to be the Proving Ground.

Welcome to the Proving Ground. The George Washington University School of Business. This is where you have the remarkable opportunity to stand at the intersection where business meets policy meets society in downtown Washington, D.C. Where the next generation of business leaders understand the individual, organizational, societal, and global impact of every decision they make. Being the Proving Ground means teaching business differently. Going beyond traditional classroom learning with an ethics-infused MBA that is at the forefront of the corporate social responsibility movement, engaged in political and regulatory debates, and focused on global leadership. It means major initiatives that bring together students and distinguished experts to create real-world solutions.  And networking and learning opportunities that give you access to the most powerful people and organizations in D.C. and around the world. Ready to walk the walk?

“Our professors and adjunct professors are often thought leaders. For instance, our macroeconomics professor previously held a prominent position
at the World Bank; he was able to bring his expertise to bear in the classroom. The George Washington School of Business has a tremendous network of alumni,
many of whom have gone on to do great things.” Carolyn Podgorsky, Global MBA, '11

Tim Fort discusses how everyday ethical behavior applies to business.

Corporate Social Responsibility is in everything we do.

It’s more than a class topic in our MBA program or a speaker we bring on campus; it’s integrated into every class, in every area of business, every day. We teach it and we believe in it.

Our leading edge CSR and sustainability initiatives are changing the way businesses approach their bottom line. We’re co-leading programs with organizations like the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Aspen Institute’s Economics and Peace to study how corporate social responsibility enhances world peace. Our partnership with Ford Motor Company explores how business relationships based on decency, respect and responsibility can impact an entire supply chain. Students participating in the GW Institute for Sustainability work with an outside entity, Cleantech University, to help develop clean technology start up companies.

As Walmart’s Director of Sustainability Strategy, Miranda Ballantine acts as the company’s point person in relations with the environmental community. Learn how our MBA’s Sustainability program helped her get there.

As an MBA student, you have the opportunity to be a part of it all through research, independent study programs, and more. And you’ll learn how CSR applies to all areas of business from distinguished faculty including Tim Fort, executive director of the GW Institute for Corporate Responsibility(ICR) and director of  GW Peace Through Commerce, who creates short videos that examine how CSR relates to business class case studies, and John Forrer, associate director of the ICR, who takes students out of the classroom and into the community to learn how to create sustainable value in the Certificate of Responsible Management program.

“As GW Global MBA’s, we understand how business ethics play out in all of our other classes. The Institute of Corporate Responsibility brings in industry experts and has a variety of projects that students can get involved in to support businesses that want to increase their triple bottom line efforts.” — Patty Pina, Global MBA, '11

You know how the business world operates 10,000 miles away.

It’s one thing to study international business. It’s quite another to experience it. At GWSB, you are surrounded by students, faculty, and staff who bring a global perspective to business education. You also have plenty of opportunities to find your own point of view in the most fascinating places. Both our Global MBA and World Executive MBA require international residencies as part of the curriculum, and in every MBA program you can choose to take part in a semester-based exchange or short-term study abroad. Either way, you’ll have an opportunity to be out in the world gaining practical experience in an area that may be very different than anywhere you have ever worked. Our International Residency and study abroad programs help you stretch your capabilities, make important career connections, and become a more socially aware, globally literate business leader.

International Residency Project

The innovative International Residency Project, required in the Global MBA, brings to life the intersection of business and society through hands-on projects in which students find workable solutions to current global business issues. Students act as consultants and have traveled to destinations including, but not limited to, Serbia, India, Spain, Sweden, South Korea and Mexico to work with companies on topics such as marketing of sustainable initiatives, microfinance, post-conflict business development, and business development in emerging markets.

Short-term study abroad programs facilitate a deeper understanding of international business and can supplement your daily classroom learning. Programs last from 1-2weeks and are offered each semester.

“At the Vancouver Olympics, we were introduced to sports agents for athletes and companies like Nike. I got to chat with Coke’s sports marketing executive who set up the World Cup arrangements. We met with everybody - from the British Columbia Finance Ministry, who talked to us about whether the Olympics generate revenue - to hospitality, food and transportation staff.” Ian Cropp, Global MBA, '11

At the Intersection of Business and Politics

We’re involved in how decisions are made and lives are changed.

As the financial world is being repaired, it’s an exciting and enlightening time to be in D.C. Only this MBA program puts you in the thick of the current debate surrounding healthcare, finance, and tax reform. These are policies and regulations that drive entire industries and will forever impact how global businesses run. Here you don’t just read about them in the headlines or a textbook; you observe them firsthand.

GWSB is located just blocks from the World Bank, IMF, and State Department, and a close walk to the White House, Capitol, international embassies, and much more. We’re in a unique position to offer our students unlimited opportunities, both on and off campus, to engage in the ongoing conversations, attend seminars, hear from expert speakers, and rub elbows with movers and shakers in the field.

“I can go to a restaurant and stand next to someone totally engaged in the world of policy. I can always find a workshop, seminar, or distinguished speaker on relevant policy issues.” Andrew Schneider, Global MBA, ’11

“The opportunities to attend events and hear incredibly predominant people speak throughout the area is something that cannot be understated about DC.  The opportunities for learning outside of the classroom are endless.  And there are very few places in the world where you can jog by Hillary Clinton and not be trampled by security.” - Melissa McLane, Global MBA, '11
